Overview
The Ogbonna Scholarship Award provides full tuition scholarships to deserving and economically disadvantaged young students for secondary and tertiary education. Selection criteria include academic excellence, financial need, and the personal impact that the award will have on the recipient's academic aspirations.
This award was launched in Nigeria in April 2018 and will take effect from September 2018 to support the academic aspirations of young students with excellent academic performance and leadership potential. The program will support at least 45 students in its inaugural year but hopes to support even more students in subsequent years.
Inaugural Year Proposal
1. Students from the Catholic Secondary School at Iheaka in Igbo-Eze South LGA of Enugu State, Nigeria will be selected as well as those from neighboring Boys’ and Girls’ secondary schools. ( Ovoko Boys and Iheaka Girls’ Schools)
2. A scholarship program providing full tuition for 15 students each from SS1, SS2, and SS3 (45 students in total) is proposed. The scholarship will also provide funds for WASSCE and JAMB/UME exams for final year students.
3. Scholarships will be awarded based on scholastic achievement and indigency. Students being considered based on merit will be screened based on academic performance in the preceding years of enrollment at the school. All scholarship candidates will be required to take both a written test and an oral interview prior to selection. Students that demonstrate a passion for learning and the intention to pursue university education especially those from Ekoyi, Iheaka will also be given preference.
4. All scholarship recipients will be expected to maintain a grade of at the least 6 credits each year, including in Mathematics and English. Scholarships will be rescinded from any awardees who fail to meet this criterion. Awardees selected based on merit may be expected to maintain higher grades.
5. The top 3 graduating students who are able to obtain admission at any Federal/ state University in Nigeria will be granted full scholarship to attend the university for the duration of their course. The number of students awarded may increase in the future. Awardees must maintain a 3.5 GPA each year to continue to receive scholarship funding.
6. Timely receipt of verifiable grade reports or transcripts each year is mandatory for continued scholarship funding.
